Vaginal Dryness Q&A

MonaLisa Touch Chico

What causes vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness may occur due to various medical conditions or medications, but it’s most often caused by low levels of estrogen. Estrogen is essential for vaginal health because it keeps the vaginal wall strong and elastic and maintains normal lubrication and acidity.

Women may have low estrogen for many reasons, including:

  • Childbirth
  • Breastfeeding
  • Cancer treatment
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Surgical removal of ovaries

When vaginal dryness develops during perimenopause (the years right before menopause) or after the onset of menopause, it’s part of a condition called vaginal atrophy. If you have vaginal atrophy, you’ll likely experience other symptoms such as vaginal burning and itching and frequent urination.

How is vaginal dryness treated?

Vaginal dryness is typically treated with a vaginal moisturizer or lubricant. Your doctor may recommend medication like ospemifene, topical estrogen, or hormone replacement therapy.

Chances are you don’t need to rely on lubricants, hormones, or other medications, however. Laser treatment with the MonaLisa Touch® is highly effective for relieving vaginal dryness due to estrogen deficiency.

How does the MonaLisa Touch® relieve vaginal dryness?

The MonaLisa Touch® uses a fractional CO2 laser to treat vaginal atrophy. The laser treatment is delivered directly to vaginal tissues using a round device that’s inserted into the vagina then emits microbeams of laser energy. As laser energy gently heats vaginal tissues, it triggers the production of collagen, elastin, and blood vessels.

The changes that occur in vaginal tissues after treatment with the MonaLisa Touch® restore your vaginal health. Tissues that make up the vaginal wall regain tone and your natural lubrication and blood supply return, so you no longer suffer from vaginal dryness. The treatment also alleviates the other symptoms caused by vaginal atrophy.

What should you expect during and after MonaLisa Touch® treatment?

One MonaLisa Touch® session only takes about five minutes, and it’s so comfortable you won’t need anesthetic. You can return to your daily schedule when the session is finished.

Optimal vaginal restoration is achieved with three sessions spaced about six weeks apart. After you complete the initial treatment, your results are long-lasting. Dr. Davis may recommend an annual session to maintain vaginal health, but the need for and frequency of maintenance treatment is different for each woman.
