Vaginal Discharge Q&A

What is the difference between healthy and abnormal vaginal discharge?

You continuously shed fluid and dead cells through your vagina. This normal discharge keeps tissues healthy, protects you from infection, and provides lubrication. The amount and quality of normal vaginal discharge changes depending on the stage of your monthly menstrual cycle, but it’s typically clear to white and doesn’t have a noticeable odor.

You can identify abnormal discharge by a change in the color, odor, amount, or consistency of the discharge. Abnormal discharge is often accompanied by itching or pain.

What causes an increase in vaginal discharge?

When your vaginal discharge increases and has an odor, it’s likely caused by bacterial overgrowth. During pregnancy, it’s typical to see an increase in the amount of normal vaginal discharge. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also upset the balance of yeast and bacteria, causing a vaginal infection and abnormal vaginal discharge.

Women may also experience a change in vaginal discharge when they reach menopause. When this happens, the discharge is caused by vaginal atrophy, or genitourinary syndrome of menopause.

Vaginal atrophy develops from the loss of estrogen. Estrogen plays a central role in the maintenance of healthy vaginal tissues. Without enough estrogen, the vaginal wall becomes thin, dry, and less elastic. Women then experience symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness, burning, and itching
  • Decreased lubrication
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding after sex
  • More frequent vaginal infections
  • Frequent urination

How is vaginal discharge treated?

Vaginal discharge is always treated by diagnosing and addressing the underlying condition. For example, you may need an antibiotic or antifungal medication to treat bacterial and yeast infections.

When vaginal discharge is caused by vaginal atrophy, hormone replacement therapy is one option. Another safe treatment is available, however -- laser therapy using the MonaLisa Touch®.

How does the MonaLisa Touch® treat vaginal discharge?

The MonaLisa Touch® eliminates vaginal discharge by treating vaginal atrophy. This innovative medical device uses laser energy to gently heat tissues inside your vagina. The heat makes tissues produce more collagen, elastin, and blood vessels, which restores vaginal health and effectively alleviates all the symptoms of vaginal atrophy.

One treatment with the MonaLisa Touch® only takes about five minutes, and it’s a comfortable procedure that doesn’t require an anesthetic. To achieve optimal restoration of vaginal tissues, three treatments are recommended. After that, you’ll only need an annual session to maintain long-term results.
