What causes urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence can develop from underlying health conditions, some medications, pelvic floor disorders, and weak bladder muscles due to aging. Urinary incontinence also frequently develops from hormone changes during menopause.

Estrogen is essential for maintaining healthy tissues in the bladder and urethra, the tube that carries urine out of your body. When estrogen levels drop at menopause, the bladder, and urethra atrophy or weaken, so they can’t control urine the way they should.

The symptoms you may develop include:

  • Stress incontinence: urine leaks due to pressure from laughing, coughing, or certain movements
  • Urge incontinence or overactive bladder: sudden urge to urinate that’s so strong you may not reach the bathroom
  • Increased frequency of urination
  • Waking up during the night to urinate

How is urinary incontinence treated?

Your doctor may recommend exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, bladder training, medication, or injections of collagen or Botox®. In some cases, surgery is needed to restore muscles or insert devices to help stop urine leakage. When your urinary incontinence is caused by loss of estrogen, you may be a good candidate for laser treatment using the MonaLisa Touch®.

How does the MonaLisa Touch® treat incontinence?

The MonaLisa Touch® is an advanced laser that’s specially designed to treat vaginal atrophy, which includes all of the changes that take place in vaginal and urinary tissues when estrogen declines at menopause or due to any other medical condition.

During treatment with the MonaLisa Touch®, laser energy is delivered directly to vaginal tissues through a round device that’s inserted into the vagina. As heat from the laser reaches urethral tissues and pelvic floor muscles that support urinary function, it stimulates synthesis of new collagen and blood vessels. As a result, the tissues are strengthened, they regain tone, and their ability to control urine improves.

What should you expect during treatment with the MonaLisa Touch®?

Treatment with the MonaLisa Touch® is fast and pain-free. One session takes about five minutes and most women are quite comfortable, so anesthesia isn’t necessary. You may experience slight redness or swelling, and you should avoid sex for a few days, but you don’t need to plan downtime.

MonaLisa Touch® effectively treats all the symptoms caused by the low estrogen. Whether you have incontinence, vaginal dryness, or painful intercourse, you can look forward to better urinary and vaginal health after three sessions with the MonaLisa Touch®.
